
ORGANIC & BIODYNAMIC
GOOD TO KNOW BEFORE GOING ANY FURTHER :
An organic Champagne is not necessarily biodynamic... on the other hand, a biodynamic Champagne is necessarily organic first! You will find the appropriate label for each Cuvée, that is to say the "Organic Agriculture" label for organic Champagnes and the "Demeter" label for biodynamic Champagnes. Here is a simplified explanation to understand first what an "Organic" Champagne is, and then a "Biodynamic" Champagne is!
To be eligible for ORGANIC CERTIFICATION, the Winemaker or Champagne House must comply with specifications, for the cultivation of the vine but also for the winemaking... since 2012 in Champagne for the latter. It takes 3 years to be able to obtain the Certification! The AB Label guarantees agriculture with few inputs (Copper, Sulphur) and a strictly prohibited use of harsh chemical products (Synthetic Pesticides, Chemical Fertilizers, Herbicides) which strongly impact the natural balances and are often suspected of being harmful to their users. The quality of the soil occupies a primordial place in organic farming. Efforts focus on the correct use of plowing, the cultivation of green manures or natural grassing, and the incorporation of rich materials of natural origin. These practices stimulate soil life, encourage the vines to take root deeply, allowing the full expression of the diverse and varied terroirs in the four corners of the Champagne appellation to be drawn, to the great delight of wine lovers. Respected soil is soil that retains excess rainwater, does not pollute natural and artificial water networks through erosion, and is home to a rich biodiversity.
To be able to benefit from the DEMETER CERTIFICATION, the basis is completely identical! Organic Certification is a prerequisite requested before committing to a Biodynamic certification. This uses specific natural preparations in addition and takes into account the cosmic influence (Lunar Calendar) and the relationships between natural elements, to heal the earth and regenerate the soils. The goal is to strengthen the immune system of the vine when "all is well" in order to greatly limit the impact of future diseases on the vineyard. Prevention is better than cure, protection is better than care... that is the Motto!
